Food I won’t eat

I am a pretty adventurous eater. I’ve speculated that I would try monkey brains if given the chance. I’ve even tried this rice dish with congealed pig blood. Recently in Jamaica I ordered things without even knowing what I was being served. But after reading the wikipedia article on acquired tastes I couldn’t help but post about the first food I wouldn’t even try.

casu marzu is an Italian cheese with some special flavor added by Piophila casei. That’s right, the cheese fly. Actually not cheese flies but cheese fly larvae. “These larvae are deliberately introduced to the cheese, promoting an advanced level of fermentation and breaking down of the cheese’s fats.” Sounds delicious doesn’t it? Wait theres more!

Piophila casei larvae can pass through the stomach alive (human stomach acids do not usually kill them) and take up residency for some period of time in the intestines, where they can cause serious lesions as they attempt to bore through the intestinal walls. ”

MMMMMmmmmm, that is good eating.

    Dude, we were JUST watching a National Geographic piece about this. Apparently, the cheese gets softer as the maggots repeatedly eat and shit it out, so you’re effectively eating maggot poo. As a Chinese person and therefore at the top of the food chain, I say: ew.
